| Word / Name Origins |
| Albus means "white" in Latin (maybe for white beard). Wisdom. Or Governor of Britain at the death of the Emperor Pertinax, Decimus Clodius Albinus (Albinus=Albus?) attempted to seize the throne but ended up as Caesar in alliance with another imperial contender, Septimius Severus. After Severus defeated two other rivals (Voldemort and... maybe Slytherin?), the now expendable Albinus was forced into another attempt at usurpation, an attempt that came to an end at the bloody battle of Lyon
Percival was one of the legendary Knights of the Round Table. The name itself means "pierces the veil," "pierces the valley," or "destroyer." It also translates as "bringer of peace" and "from the pear tree." St. Wulfric was described as a hermit. JK Rowling characterizes Dumbledore as a loner. St. Wulfric was a worldly man, as was Dumbledore. St. Wulfric was born in Bristol, the same town Hagrid flew over from Godric's Hollow. St. Wulfric supposedly had the gift of prophecy. Brian: from Old Celtic "bre" meaning "hill" or by extension "high, noble." Brian Boru was an Irish king who thwarted Viking attempts to conquer Ireland in the 11th century. He was victorious in the Battle of Clontarf, but he himself was slain. People associate Brian as a last name, but believe it's derived from Brian Boru. Dumbledore means "Bumblebee" in Old English. JK Rowling has said that she chose this name because she imagined Dumbledore walking around the castle, humming to himself. |
Albus (Percival Wulfric Brian) Dumbledore was the Headmaster of Hogwarts, and was tall and slender, with long white hair and a beard of the same colour. He was the only wizard with magical powers that rival Lord Voldemort's, which is the reason why Voldemort never dared to attack Hogwarts directly.
Albus Dumbledore prefered to stay in the background except for the few occasions in the year when official meetings were held at Hogwarts. He was extremely clever and highly perceptive. As Mrs. Weasley pointed out: "Never misses a trick, that man".
An accomplished wizard, his full title and awards would read: Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorcerer, Chief Warlock, Supreme Mugwump, International Confederation of Wizards.
Possibly his most notable achievement was his defeat of the dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945. Other achievements are the discovery of the twelve uses of dragon blood and study on the subject of alchemy with Nicholas Flamel.
Albus Dumbledore founded both the first and second Orders of the Phoenix. He has a brother, Aberforth and a sister, Ariana.
Albus Dumbledore was killed by Severus Snape during the 1997 attack on Hogwarts by the Death Eaters.
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, we learn that Dumbledore and the famous Dark Wizard Gellert Grindelwald (who Albus famously defeated) were childhood friends. They were working together, trying to work for the "Greater Good", which involved some sacrifices on the Muggles' part. This news shocks Harry and the rest of the wizarding world, who always perceived him as a Muggle-lover and friend to everyone.
It was recently revealed by J.K Rowling at her reading at Carnegie Hall that Dumbledore was gay and in love with Grindelwald.
