Apparition (also referred to as Apparation) is a form of magical transportation. Simply put: a wizard or witch simply disappears (or Disapparates) from one location and reappears (or Apparates) in another. Often associated with loud "pops" or "bangs".

Apparation Instructions

"The most important thing to remember when Apparating are the three D's!" (HBP, American Edition, pg. 382)

  1. Destination -- Focus on where you're going
  2. Determination -- Want to be in that space. Feel the want in every part of your body.
  3. Deliberation -- Turn on the spot and concentrate on moving to your destination.

A Few Notes on Apparation

  • Never Apparate directly into another Wizarding home -- this is considered a faux pas in Wizarding society.
  • You cannot Apparate onto Hogwarts grounds.
  • You must have license in order to legally apparate. Ministry sponsored tests are issued to those 17 and above, as apparition can have dangerous (and often painful) consequences. It is not uncommon for some to take a test more than once.
    • Ron Weasley failed his first test when he left half an eyebrow behind.
  • Apparition gets more and more difficult the greater the traveling distance becomes. Only highly skilled apparators will attempt intercontinental apparition.

Splinching

A consequence of poorly performed apparition is splinching, which refers to incompletely apparating, leaving a body part of some kind behind, as small as half an eyebrow, or as big as an entire leg. Professor Wilkie Twycross, Harry's Apparition Instructor, says that splinching is a result of not enough determination.

How It Feels

"He felt as though he had just been forced through a very tight rubber tube." (HBP, American Edition, pg. 58)
The effects or symptoms are similar to rapidly transcending a highly-pressurized area (i.e. ears popping, etc.).

Side-Along Apparation

Side-Along Appariton is when a witch or wizard apparates, taking another person with them. It is useful for transporting underage witches or wizards in emergencies. The second person must hold on to the witch or wizard apparating, normally on the arm.
