Arabella Doreen Figg is a batty cat-loving old lady who lives on Wisteria Walk, a street close to Privet Drive. Mrs. Figg is a Squib but nonetheless a member of the Order of the Phoenix who keeps an eye on Harry during his summer vacation in Privet Drive.
Name Origin
Arabella is a Scottish name, derived from 'Annabella'. It also took the form 'Orabel' in the Middle Ages: meaning 'Invokable', 'A Saint who could be Invoked'. There may thus be a connection to her rescue of Harry. Fig means "not literal" and a fig leaf is something that conceals or camouflages.
Mrs Figg may well be related to the Black Family, since her name shares common features with names in that family: her forename is four syllables, in common with 'Elladora', 'Callidora', 'Araminta', 'Andromeda' and 'Nymphadora'; it contains the sound '(B)Ell(a)', in common with 'Cedrella', 'Elladora', 'Belvina', 'Bellatrix' and 'Druella' (who is, however, only a Black by marriage); and her middle name contains the element 'Dora', in common with 'Elladora', 'Dorea', 'Callidora', and 'Nymphadora'.
