Bartemius "Barty" Crouch, Jr. is the son of Barty Crouch and the Death Eater who appears in the shape of Mad-Eye Moody as Professor for the Defence Against the Dark Arts in Hogwarts. In Goblet of Fire, Barty regularly takes Polyjuice potion to assume the form of the Auror. He fools Dumbledore and ensures that Harry successfully completes each task in the Triwizard Tournament. He is responsible for making the Triwizard cup at the centre of the maze a portkey, which takes both Harry and Cedric Diggory to the graveyard of Voldemort's parents.
Dumbledore later administers a few drops of Veritaserum, and Barty reveals how he escaped from Azkaban disguised as his mother after taking Polyjuice potion during a visit, and was kept under the Imperius curse by his father to stop him returning to his master. He became growingly resilient to his father's control, and consequently conjured the Dark Mark at the Quidditch World Cup.
He is also the reason why the house-elf Winky falls to the butterbeer.
He was kissed by a dementor at the end of harry's fifth year at Hogwarts for "the minister's security".
