A Basilisk - according to Oriental mythology, is a mixture between dragon and rooster, hatched from a mis-shaped chicken egg that was bread by a toad, by a serpent, or in manure. Looking into a Basilisk's eyes is deadly. If its gaze is indirect (e.g. by seeing only the mirror image) the person gets to be petrified instead of killed.

Word Origins: basilisk = little king (Greek)

Spiders are afraid of this beast, even the big ones, but the crow of a rooster is fatal to this huge snake. The legendary monster in the Chamber of Secrets was such a Basilisk.
