A broomstick is the device used by wizards and witches for individual transportation. To reach another location, they mount a broomstick and ride through the air. This method works anywhere, in contrast to travelling through chimneys of magic households which is much faster but restricted to the locations where such chimneys can be found.
Broomsticks are used only in western cultures. The equivalent of eastern cultures is the flying carpet which is much more comfortable but slower and less flexible. The first broomsticks, according to Scottish writer Guthrie Lochrin in 1107, were rather uncomfortable. He noted many wizards suffered from splinter-filled buttocks and bulging piles. 1
Broomsticks are also used to play Quidditch, the most popular and most dangerous sport of the wizarding world. There are various models of different speed, reaction, quality, and - of course - price.
Models of brooms include: the Cleansweep, the Nimbus Two Thousand, the Nimbus Two Thousand and One and the Firebolt.
