Definition

The term Canon was originally used by the Christian church to refer to a list of books deemed to be the authoritative record to be included in the Bible. It is also used to refer to a literary body of work which represents a definitive overview of a genre, author or time period. In fanfiction the term used to describe fics/art which depict actual events in the fictional universe. It can also be used to refer to the style of characterisation used in fanfics. Even if the story is mainly fanon, characters can still be described as canon if their actions/behaviour is similar to what they are in the original works. Although some purists argue that all fanworks are non-canon, it is generally accepted that stories/art set in the current known Harry Potter universe (to Book 6) are canon. Older fanworks written as canon which have been contradicted by new facts become fanon.

Relationships (Ships) and canon

Relationships or ships can be tricky to define in terms of what is canon or fanon, as often the relationship develops beyond the scope of the original works. Generally, relationships are considered canon until contradictory information is published. For a ship to be considered canon there should be some basis for the relationship in the original work. Slash relationships are generally considered to be fanon, although there have been lively debates about the development of Harry/Draco as a possible canon ship after the release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
