The Unforgivable Curses are three of the most Dark curses in existance. Using them on an other human being results in a lifetime penalty in Azkaban.
However, during the first Voldemort crisis, Barty Crouch, Sr. authorized Aurors to use the Unforgivable Curses when combatting Voldemort and his Death Eater followers, a move seen by some as overzealous.
