Cruciatus Curse
From Hpwiki
Crucio is the incantation of the Cruciatus Curse. The spell is used to cause the target of the spell excruciating pain. Crucio means "I torture" in Latin. One of the three Unforgivable Curses, like The Killing Curse it leaves no physical marks. The use of this spell on another human being earns the offender a one-way trip to Azkaban.
Introduced in the fourth book, Goblet of Fire, by Barty Crouch, Jr. who was using Polyjuice Potion to disguise himself as ex- Auror Alastor Moody. Prolonged exposure to the Cruciatius may result in insanity. Victims of this curse have included:
• Frank Longbottom ex- Auror, resident of St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries Spell cast on him by Bellatrix Lestrange
• Alice Longbottom ex- Auror, resident of St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries Spell cast on her by Bellatrix Lestrange
• Neville Longbottom student, Hogwarts
• Harry Potter student, Hogwarts
Bellatrix Lestrange has claimed that the Cruciatus will only work properly if the user wants to enjoy their victim's suffering, righteous anger (such as Harry Potter felt after Lestrange murdered his godfather Sirius Black) is insufficient.
