Defensive Magical Theory was the textbook for Professor Umbridge's Defence Against the Dark Arts class during her reign at Hogwarts. It was written by Wilbert Slinkhard and fit in nicely with Umbridge's course aims of a safe, Ministry-approved cirriculum. Students were told upon entering her class that they could put their wands away, as they would be reading this book and there would be "no need to talk."

During Professor Umbridge's second lesson, Hermione informed her that she had read the entire book. Umbridge was impressed in spite of herself and asked her what Slinkhard says about counterjinxes in chapter fifteen. Hermione responds that Slinkhard says that counterjinxes is a name poeple give their jinxes to make them sound more acceptable, but she disagrees. For this, Umbridge takes five points from Gryffindor house.

Once Dumbledore's Army is formed, Harry stops reading this book and instead savors memories of recent meetings.
