A Deluminator or "Put-Outer" is a magic tool used by wizards when they have to do business in the Muggle world without wanting to be watched too closely. The put-outer looks like a cigarette lighter, but when clicking it, it makes the closest light or lamp go out rather than burn a flame. You would use it by clicking until the area around you is dark enough to do what you had in mind without anyone near you able to watch. To switch all lights on again, you click the thing once the other direction. If the sources of the captured light are not nearby, the light simply hangs in mid-air in orbs.

Such an item is owned by Albus Dumbledore, and was used on the night Harry Potter was left on the doorstep of Number Four, Privet Drive. In the fifth book, Mad-Eye Moody borrows it from Dumbledore to put out the lights at Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The item is passed on to Ron Weasley through Dumbledore's will. Although initially bewildered by the gift as the others are with theirs, Ron eventually thinks that Dumbledore knew he was going to run away. Harry corrects him, saying Dumbledore knew he was going to come back. In the final book, the Deluminator is very useful for lighting areas. Ron has a habit of clicking it on and off, to Hermione's annoyance.
