Dobby is a house-elf with a great admiration for Harry Potter. When the story begins, Dobby's master is Lucius Malfoy. Harry frees him at the end of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets with a sock. Dobby then disappears to return in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, where he is a paid house-elf employed in the Hogwarts kitchens. He oftens aids Harry at Hogwarts in subsequent books and cares for his friend, Winky.
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Dobby is stabbed in the chest with a knife by Bellatrix Lestrange, while helping Harry and his friends to get away from Voldemort and the Death Eaters. Unfortunately, he dies instantly and Harry buries him in the backyard of Bill and Fleur's cottage.
Name Origin: A Dobby is a fatuous or foolish person. A weave of cloth that is durable and natural-looking. Finer stores still sell shirts made of "dobby" weave. Also the name of a type of house-elf-like creature in folklore.
