A dragon is a mythical animal that appears in legends and tales across the world. Dragons are shaped like lizards or salamanders, except that their size ranges from a few meters to the dimensions of a supermarket. A common aspect in most legends is that dragons breathe fire, whether through their mouth or through their nostrils. In Western legends, dragons have wings and can fly, while in Eastern (especially Chinese) legends, they cannot.

There is no standard for dragon characters. According to legend, dragons cover the full range from very evil to very good. Their most favourable depiction can be found in the Chinese culture which knows a Red Dragon, a Green Dragon, and a White Dragon, the White one being the most respected.

In Western legends, dragons can only be controlled - if ever - by wizards who use them for guarding treasures, caverns, castles, and the like.

Another job dragons have been well-known for is the guarding of beautiful virgins. In most of these scenarios, the virgin has been kidnapped by a sorcerer and is doomed to spend the rest of her life on a lonely island or in a dark forest. Inevitably, the dragon guarding the virgin is killed by a knight on a quest to free the lonely maiden. Typically, the virgin loses her virginity soon afterwards.

In the wizarding world of Harry Potter, there are dragon breeds similar to horse breeds in the Muggle world. For the specific breeds, see below for the list of fanart forums by breed.

Dragon blood can be used for twelve different purposes. It was Albus Dumbledore who discovered and categorized them.
