Felix Felicis is a potion the colour of molten gold. It makes the drinker extremely lucky for a few hours or a day, depending on the dosage. If taken in excess, it causes giddiness, recklessness, and dangerous overconfidence. It is very toxic in large quantities. This potion is banned in organized competitions such as sporting events, exams, or elections.

Harry Potter wins a vial of the potion in Professor Slughorn's first Potions class.

Word Origin: Felix is the Latin word meaning happy or lucky; Felicis (pronounced with a hard "c" as in "cat") is the plural form of that word. It is also said to be related to the cartoon Felix The Cat; 'Felicis' may also come from 'felicity', meaning extreme good luck or happiness."
