Gellert Grindelwald, is considered to be the most dangerous wizard that lived in modern times, except for Voldemort.

Very little is known of the Grindlewald's early years, until he attends Durmstrang School for magic. According to rumour , was expelled from Durmstrang for casting spells too dark for their tolerance. After travelling abroad for some months, he went to visit his great-aunt in Godric's Hollow shortly after the graduation of Albus Dumbledore from Hogwarts, and the two shared a mutual obsession with the magical artefacts known as the Deathly Hallows.

Grindlewald was obsessed with the idea of throwing off the Statute of Secrecy of the Wizarding World and creating a new ruling class of wizards. Dumbledore also was tempted by this philosophy due to what happened to his sister, Ariana Dumbledore, but stated it would have to be done "for the greater good", a slogan Grindlewald took to heart. Grindlewald and Dumbledore had a falling out after Ariana was killed, and Grindlewald fled the country.

In the next few years, Grindlewald found the location of one of the Deathly Hallows, the Elder Wand, and managed to obtain this item, stealing it from the wand maker, Gregorovitch. Using its power, he created a dark army to take over most of Europe, until he was defeated by Albus Dumbledore in 1945, who took the Elder Wand from him. He then was imprisoned in Nurmengard Prison, which he made himself during his days of power, and remained there until killed by Voldemort in 1998.

It has been suggested that Grindelwald was a literary representation of the Nazi malevolence against the forces of good, represented by Dumbledore.
