Giant

A giant is a human-like creature that is about twenty to twenty-five feet tall. Relations between giants and the humans in the wizarding world are difficult. Grawp is one giant mentioned in the Harry Potter world (albeit he is considered 'small' by his half-brother, Hagrid), while Rubeus Hagrid and Olympe Maxime are half-giants, each with one human and one giant parent.

Giants appear in the mythologies of all cultures. Most often, they are described as brutal and stupid creatures; however, there are exceptions. For example, the Cyclopes (see below) are very skilled craftsmen who work with metals. Greek mythology describes many sorts of giants:

  • Titans, who are overthrown gods
  • Giants
  • Cyclopes, most famous Polyphem in the Odysseus (Ulysses) saga
