Word / Name Origins
Ginevra, (Italian) means woman of the people. There is an old myth about a bride named Ginevra, who playfully hid in a trunk on her wedding day. The lid fell, burying her alive; and eventually her skeleton was discovered. This could relate to Ginny being taken into the Chamber of Secrets where her 'skeleton would lie forever.'

Ginevra "Ginny" Molly Weasley is a student in Gryffindor house at Hogwarts, the seventh and last child in the Weasley family, and the only girl. She is one year younger than her brother Ron and Harry, on whom she has a crush beginning in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

In Harry's fifth year, Ginny is a member of Dumbledore's Army. As such, she was one of the six participants in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, where she broke her ankle. She also replaces Harry as Seeker on the Gryffindor Quidditch team after he is banned in his fifth year.

After "giving up" on Harry in her third year, Ginny began to date other boys at Hogwarts including Michael Corner (her fourth year) and Dean Thomas (the beginning of her fifth).

When Ginny is in her fifth year and Harry is in his sixth, the two begin going out. Harry, at the end of the novel, tells Ginny regretfully that they can no longer be involved with each other. Harry breaks off their relationship to protect Ginny, because Harry believes Voldemort would harm Ginny to get to Harry.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Ginny makes an appearance at the beginning and at the end of the book. She and Harry still have feelings for each other, as evidenced by her "birthday present" to him, a kiss interrupted by Ron. When Harry, Ron, and Hermione go off in search of the Horcruxes, Ginny goes back to Hogwarts, where she, Neville, and Luna attempt to steal the Sword of Gryffindor. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Ginny refuses to obey her mother and leave, even though she is under-age. In the epilogue, she is married to Harry, and they have three children: James, Albus, and Lily. In a July 30 interview with JKR, she states that Ginny played on the Holyhead Harpies before settling down, having kids and becoming the Quidditch correspondent for the Daily Prophet.

Personality

According to Ron, Ginny is a great lover of cats. This seems reinforced later on as Ginny is frequently seen in the company of Crookshanks. Many of Ginny's actions are also described as "cat-like".

Ginny is fiercely independent. She has a bold personality and can assert herself. She frequently stands up to her brothers when they tease her or scold her. In one instance, she has even yelled at Hermione for scolding Harry. When Ginny kisses Harry for the first time, the look on her face is said to be 'blazing'. This description, accompanied with her red hair, likens Ginny to fire. She is strong and resistant and beautiful.

Ginny is popular in school - many boys at Hogwarts have crushes on her and Ginny dated Michael Corner, Dean Thomas and Harry Potter.

Throughout the first three Harry Potter books, Ginny was shy when around Harry due to her huge crush on him. However, Hermione told Ginny that if she acted a bit more like herself , relaxed around Harry and went out with a few boys, he'd take more notice of her. Throughout the later books, particulary Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince, it is clear Ginny takes this advice on board. She becomes a more prominant character and a result of this is that Harry does take more notice of her, and they eventually get together.

When needed, Ginny can tell a boldfaced lie without blinking an eye. She has done this both to her mother, as well as other students at Hogwarts.

Ginny's main confidante and proabably her best friend, is Hermione. Hermione and Ginny are thrown together at The Burrow, as they have to share a room in a house full of men. However, their friendship grows into a close one, despite them being so different. Hermione seems to know a lot more about Ginny than her brothers do.

Ginny's favourite jinx is The Bat-Bogey Hex, which she is very skilled at.

Harry associates Ginny's smell with flower, thanks to her 'flowery' perfume and her 'sweet-smelling' hair.
