The Griffin is a mythological beast with a lion's body and the clawed legs, wings, and head of an eagle. In Greek mythology, a griffin was a sacred companion of the god Apollo. Because of its twin nature, a griffin was later used as a symbol for Jesus Christ (Dante, Purgatori 29, 108).

Word Origins: (Assyrian) k'rub -> grifo -> griffin
