| Rubeus is latin for "red." In divination it is a negative symbol referring to the planet and Roman god of war, Mars, which serves as a warning for caution and a need for retreat. (This would tie in with Hagrid's attempts to civilize Grawp) Hagrid in an old English word. According to Rowling, "If you were hagrid-- it's a dialect word-- you'd had a bad night. Hagrid is a big drinker-- he's had a lot of bad nights." |
Rubeus Hagrid is the Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts. Born to a human father and giant mother, Hagrid is a half-giant with a knack for monstrous beasts that nobody else can control (occasionally not even himself). Most people refer to him as Hagrid; his first name is not commonly used.
Hagrid lives in a small house at the edge of the Forbidden Forest. He shares his room with Fang, a large boar hound, and the occasional dangerous pet. One such beast, Aragog, is the reason why Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts and is no longer allowed to use magic. In his free time, Hagrid enjoys drinking to excess and often invites Harry, Ron, and Hermione over for tea and "rock" cakes.
In Harry's third year, Hagrid becomes the Care of Magical Creatures professor, and in Harry's fifth year, Hagrid becomes a member of the second Order of the Phoenix.
His wand was 16", bendy, and made of oak, but was snapped in half following his expulsion from Hogwarts. However, the remains are hidden in the tip of a pink umbrella and are secretly used on occasion.
Because Hagrid was the one who delivered Harry to the Dursley's doorstep on the night of Voldemort's downfall, and because he alone introduced Harry to the wizarding world, many find it symbolic that he carried Harry out of the Forbidden Forest during the Battle of Hogwarts.
