The Death Eaters are the followers of Lord Voldemort. A Death Eater can be recognized by the Dark Mark that is branded on his or her left arm. After the Dark Lord's downfall, some of his Death Eaters remained loyal to the "cause" and either died fighting or allowed themselves to be dragged off to Azkaban. Others denied having ever been involved, claiming to have acted under Imperius Curse, or bought their freedom by selling out their fellow Death Eaters.

For a long time Sirius Black has been believed to be a Death Eater, and indeed Lord Voldemort's "second in command", yet all of these claims are untrue.

Bertha Jorkins - Mind ruthelessly tortured for information by Lord Voldemort, then disposed of.
Cedric Diggory - killed by Peter Pettigrew (on Voldemort's orders) on the night Voldemort returned.
Sirius Black - killed by Bellatrix Lestrange during the battle at the Department of Mysteries.

Alice Longbottom and Frank Longbottom, tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange with the Cruciatus Curse, Rodolphus Lestrange, Rabastan Lestrange, and [Barty Crouch, Jr.]], fall or winter of 1980.
Remus Lupin, bitten by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback (made a full werewolf). Killed during the Battle of Hogwarts.
Nymphadora Lupin/"Tonks", killed by Bellatrix Lestrange during the Battle of Hogwarts.
Bill Weasley, bitten by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback (now has some werewolf tendencies).
Katie Bell- cursed by a necklace given to her by Madam Rosmerta under the influence of the Imperius Curse cast by Draco Malfoy, intended for Albus Dumbledore. Made a full recovery at St. Mungo's
Lily and James Potter, murdered by Voldemort himself.
Caradoc Dearborn - disappeared, fate unknown.
Mr.Ollivander - kidnapped by Lord Voldemort, later rescued.
Florean Fortescue - disappeared, fate unknown.
Fred Weasley - Killed when a section of Hogwarts caved in during the Battle of Hogwarts.
Colin Creevey - Killed during the Battle of Hogwarts
Alastor Moody - Killed during the flight to the safe houses
Severus Snape - Killed by Nagini
Dobby- Killed by Bellatrix Lestrange with a silver knife through the chest.
Hedwig- Killed by a flying Avada Kedavra curse aimed at Harry and Hagrid
George Weasley-had an ear blasted off
Albus Dumbledore- killed by Severus Snape (who was under Dumbledore's orders and the order of the Unbreakable Vow to do so.)
