Term

A school year always starts on September 1st, when students will usually arrive by a train called the Hogwarts Express. The train leaves London at 11:00 a.m. from Platform 9 3/4 and arrives at Hogsmead station near Hogwarts many hours later. A school year ends after the end of year exams, OWLs for fifth years or NEWTs for seventh years, around the middle of June. The motto of Hogwarts is "Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus" which is written under the Hogwarts arm and in English means "Never tickle a sleeping dragon".

Students

J.K. Rowling has stated that about a thousand students attend Hogwarts at any one time.

In terms of organisation of the student body, the students are split into four Houses. First-years are assigned to their house by the Sorting Hat (a supposedly impartisan judge of which House is best suited to a sortee) almost immediately upon their arrival at the school. Each house has its own areas of the school, some of which are guarded by magical paintings. One must know the current password to enter the area, but unfortunately the paintings cannot tell the difference between those who belong to the House and those who are intruders, although they otherwise seem capable of distinguishing particular students.

The Houses compete against each other each year for the House Cup and Quidditch Cup. The House Cup is awarded at the end of each year to the House which has gained the most points, while the Quidditch Cup goes to the House whose team has won the inter-house tournament.

History

Founded by Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin (the Hogwarts Founders), approximately a thousand years before the events in the series.

Much of the history and other pertinent details about Hogwarts is known to be contained within Hogwarts: a History, which is read by Hermione Granger and mentioned throughout all of the books.
