Hogwarts: A History is a book containing a detailed history of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This book is a favorite of Hermione Granger's and she quotes it throughout all Harry Potter books. Among the information contained in this book is that there enchantments placed upon Hogwarts so that apparition is not possible within the building or on the grounds.

Hermione was forced to leave this book behind in her second year (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) as it would not fit in with the various books by Professor Lockhart. When she wished to consult it to read up on the Chamber of Secrets, she found that all of the library's copies were checked out.

Hermione regularly suggests to Harry and Ron that they should read this book, but neither has shown any inclination to do so.
