House-elf

A house-elf is a small creature with bat like ears that is enslaved to its master. House-elves are not allowed to speak ill of their masters and feel driven to punish themselves even for smallest misdeeds.

A house-elf can be freed only by the master of the house-elf giving them clothes. However, it seems that most house-elves are horrified by the thought of being freed that way.

We know three House-elves in canon, all with vastly different personalities: Dobby, Winky and Kreacher.

Hermione Granger has founded S.P.E.W. (Society for the Promotion of Elven Welfare) with the ultimate goal that House-elves gain rights equal to those of witches and wizards.
