Kneazle

A Kneazle is a magical beast looking very much like a cat but with considerably more intelligence and the ability to detect suspicious characters.
Hermione's cat, Crookshanks is supposed to be part-Kneazle, and it was this that made him see through Sirius's disguise, as well as help him. Other candidates for Kneazle ancestry are Mrs. Norris and Mrs. Figg's many cats.
