Marcus Flint is a student in the Slytherin house of Hogwarts, five years older than Harry, and the captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team in Harry's first three years. He has been described as looking troll-like, many students at Hogwarts believe that he has some troll blood in him. This is impossible though, considering trolls are creatures, not beings.

Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone

In Harry's first year, Marcus is mentioned during the quidditch match between Slytherin and Gryffindor. On page 185 of the American print, it reads,

""Now I want a nice fair game, all of you," she (Madam Hooch) said, once they were all gathered around her. Harry noticed that she seemed to be speaking particularly to the Slytherin Captain, Marcus Flint, a sixth year. Harry thought Flint looked as though he has some troll blood in him."

During this same match, Flint was said to have (in the book) had many bludgers sent his way courtesy of the Weasley twins and gave the Gryffindor's a penalty shot when he rammed into Harry as he was about to catch the snitch, causing him to miss it. Afterwards, while Harry's broom was completely out of control Flint was able to score five times without anyone noticing.

When Harry fell to the ground and coughed up the snitch, winning the game for Gryffindor, it says this on page 191 of the American print,

""He didn't catch it he nearly swallowed it," Flint was still howling twenty minutes later, but it made no difference - Harry hadn't broken any rules and Lee Jordan was still happily shouting the results - Gryffindor had won by one hundred and seventy points to sixty."

The Chamber of Secrets

In Harry's second year, you first come across Marcus in the chapter "Mudbloods and Murmurs" when the Gryffindor quidditch team encountered the Slytherin quidditch team on their way to the pitch. On page 110 of the American print it reads,

""Flint!" Wood bellowed at the Slytherin Captain. "This is our practice time! We got up specially! You can clear off now!" Marcus Flint was even larger than Wood. He had a look of trollish cunning on his face as he replied, "Plenty of room for all of us Wood.""

The Slytherin team had come to train their new seeker, Draco Malfoy, with a note of consent from Professor Snape. Upon showing the gift from Draco's father Lucius Malfoy, the Nimbus Two Thousand and One broomsticks, Flint spoke,

""Very latest model. Only came out last month," said Flint carelessly flicking a speck of dust from the end of his own. "I believe it outstrips the old Two Thousand series by a considerable amount. As for the old Cleansweeps" - he smiled nastily at Fred and George, who were both clutching Cleansweep Fives - "sweeps the board with them.""

When Ron Weasley tried to jinx Draco for calling Hermione Granger a mudblood and it backfired, Marcus was laughing so hard once Ron started coughing up slugs that he needed to lean on his broom for support.

The Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry's third year, during the chapter "Gryffindor versus Ravenclaw" he was about to capture the snitch when Cho Chang screamed at "three tall, black hooded dementors." On instinct, Harry pulled out his wand and shouted the patronus charm, while holding the snitch in the other. The three figures fell to the ground in a heap and were identified as Marcus Flint, Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle being since Malfoy had been standing on Goyle's shoulders.

During the qudditch final, Marcus played a very rough game along with the rest of the Slytherin team, but it was to no avail and Gryffindor won the Quidditch Cup.

Writer's Error

This character is subject to a writer's error. While Marcus Flint should have left Hogwarts at the end of Harry's second year, he appears as a seventh-year again in the third book. The fandom term flint has since been coined as a collective term for such errors.

J.K Rowling has been heard saying that he took one too many bludgers to the head and didn't pass his exams.
