Minerva McGonagall is the Transfiguration teacher at Hogwarts, as well as Deputy Headmistress and head of the Gryffindor house. McGonagall is a tall, strict, upright witch with rectangular glasses. She is a registered Animagus who takes the shape of a tabby cat with markings around her eyes that look similar to the shape of her glasses.
In Harry's fifth year, McGonagall is a member of the Order of the Phoenix. Several times she has taken over as Headmistress of Hogwarts, once in The Chamber of Secrets and again upon Dumbledore's death in The Half Blood Prince
