Neville Longbottom is a student in the Gryffindor house of Hogwarts, in the same year and the same dormitory as Harry. Neville is very forgetful, clumsy in all magical arts, and a constant source of accidents and a target of bad luck. However, since joining Dumbledore's Army, Neville's confidence greatly increases, and he becomes a valuable asset to Harry, Ron and Hermione, showing surprising bravery on many occasions and growing into a true Gryffindor.
Neville was raised by his formidable grandmother, Augusta Longbottom, who feared that Neville contained none of the magical prowess of his parents, the famed Aurors, Frank and Alice Longbottom. When it turned out that Neville wasn't a Squib after all, his great-uncle Algie gifted him with his toad, Trevor.
Due to prolonged exposure to the Cruciatus Curse his parents - both members of the first Order of the Phoenix - are longterm patients in the St. Mungo's Insanity Ward.
He accompanied Harry to the Department of Mysteries where he was the only one among Harry's friends to actually witness Sirius' death. Before he had already been one of the few in Harry's year who was able to see Thestrals.
Neville could have been cursed as a child instead of Harry. Lord Voldemort learned a portion of Harry's prophecy through Severus Snape, up to the point where it was revealed that the person who was destined to defeat Voldemort was born in July. Harry and Neville were both born in July, so Voldemort had to make a choice between which to kill. Unfortunately for Voldemort, he made the right choice, and Harry, protected by his mother's love, caused the curse to rebound on Voldemort and banish him for years. Were it not for his Horcruxes, the rebounding curse might have killed him then and there.
Some months after the release of the seventh novel, J.K. Rowling revealed that Neville marries Hannah Abbott (who becomes landlady of the Leaky Cauldron) and takes over from Pomona Sprout as Herbology teacher at Hogwarts.
