Nicolas Flamel
From Hpwiki
Nicolas Flamel is a very old wizard, partner of Albus Dumbledore in research projects.
Nicholas Flamel was an alchemist, and is the only known person to create the Philosopher's Stone (US Version: Sorcerer's Stone)).
As of Harry's first year in 1991, Nicholas had celebrated his 665th birthday, and his wife Perenelle her 658th quietly at their home in Devon.1 Following the events of the First Year, however, Harry is informed by Professor Dumbledore that the stone is destroyed, and that Nicholas has decided it's for the best, and just has enough Elixer of Life left to set his affairs in order.
J.K Rowling has confirmed that Nicholas Flamel (and presumably his wife) have now died.2
Special Note
Both Nicholas Flamel & his wife were real people in the 14th Century, and not made up by Rowling.
Footnotes
1It is assumed that Hermione's book, being made by wizards, updated itself every year to keep it's information in date. Based on the known fact that Harry's first year is in 1991-1992, and the reading of the paragraph in early 1992 would place Nicholas Flamel's birthday at 1326, close enough to his historically estimated birthday of 1330. However, if you assume the book is talking 665 as of the last printing, and that the book itself is described as old, doing estimated dating from there places Flamel 30-100 years out of date.
