Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place is the exact address of the residence of the Black family, of which Sirius Black was a member, and who lived there during his childhood, and during Harry's fifth year. Harry is now the inherited owner of the house.
The house at this address is also the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix and is protected by the Fidelius Charm of which Albus Dumbledore is the secret-keeper, as well as being protected by many other charms cast by The Black Family.
It was Sirius's old home until he left it when he was sixteen. The house has been abandoned for years and it has fallen into disarray, and there are many magical, yet dangerous and malicious objects to be found within the house, and some of the members of the Order and "volunteers" (namely Harry, Hermione and the Weasley children) help to clean the house and dispose of dangerous objects.
Kreacher is the house-elf that serves the house and is the only remaining original inhabitant.
