Peter Pettigrew was a student at Hogwarts and a friend of James Potter, Harry's father. Peter was one of the four Marauders, where he had the nickname Wormtail, which hints at his (unregistered) Animagus shape - a rat. Following his friends, Peter was a member of the first Order of the Phoenix.

Peter changes sides and becomes a Death Eater and a servant of Lord Voldemort. The most likely reason is that Peter sought power (having always been overshadowed by his friends), and thought if he could give Voldemort valuable info (such as the whereabouts of the Potters), he would be held highly in Voldemort's regard and be repaid. Also, he believed that Voldemort was unstoppable and that by switching sides, he was sure to be on the winning side in the end.

After Voldemort's supposed death at Halloween he frames Sirius Black for the murder of Lily and James Potter. He cuts off two fingers and escapes in his rat form. He is believed dead, while in reality he stays as a pet rat with the Weasleys. Peter is discovered in 1994, at the end of Harry's third year, but manages to escape once again.

In assistance to Voldemort's return in Book 4, Pettigrew gives "The Flesh of the Servant", cutting off his own arm to resurect his master. In return, Voldemort gives him a magical hand that is seemingly made of flexible silver-it is stronger than the human hand.

His last name may have origins in Professor Pettigrew who, in the Victorian era was an expert at dissecting mummies brought from Egypt. He would do so in front of mass audiences of the Victorian aristocracy and mummified one Lord, as his request, himself.

Dumbledore predicts in the book three that Peter owes Harry his life.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

In book seven, Peter has his wand taken off him by Harry when he and his friends are improsoned in the Malfoy Manor. Peter does not try to take it back, and he is forced to throttle himself to death with his silver hand.
