| Ronald from the Old Norse Rögnvaldr, Having the Gods' Power. Bilius = bilious one of the four Medieval 'humours'. Weasley = like a weasel? |
Ronald (Ron) Bilius Weasley is a student in the Gryffindor house of Hogwarts, the sixth child in the Weasley family, as old as Harry, and Harry's best friend. Ron is tall, red haired and gangly, with freckles, big hands and feet and a long nose. His full name is Ronald, but nobody except Luna Lovegood uses it routinely. (His mother and Hermione Granger use it when sufficiently annoyed.)
Ron suffers from an inheritance he has to cope with:
- Bill, the oldest brother, was Head Boy
- Charlie, the next, was captain of the Quidditch team
- Percy, the next, a Prefect and Head Boy
- Fred and George, the twins who've opened their own (very successful) joke shop.
- And even Ginny Weasley, who, Harry and Ron agree is "far too popular for her own good."
Personality
Ron provides much of the book's comic relief because of the sarcastic wit he uses frequently in the books, reminiscent of young Sirius Black. He comes from a large, poor family, and receives many hand-me-downs from his older brothers, to his annoyance and embarrassment. He finds irritating when his family adorns love on him, (especially in company), such as his mother kissing him, or Fred and George joking about him. Ron, however, rarely asks for money from the richer Harry, and this suggests that his family have dignity and morals.
Ron is, in many ways, Harry's complete opposite, and is as such the foil to Harry the protagonist. He is poor, not famous, and has a less striking appearance (apart from his hair), and is tactless. However, Ron has a large and very loving family, which Harry greatly envies. Where Ron would swiftly wipe off his mother's kiss, Mrs Weasley kissing Harry makes Harry feel tingly.
Ron's most predominant trait other than his wit is his tactlessness. It comes as an annoyance to Hermione in particular, who constantly brings it up, but can be irritating to Harry as well, especially after a would-be successful conversation with his crush, Cho Chang, in which Ron attacks her for her Quidditch team. This is another of Ron's traits- if he has an opinion he will stick by it and is not afraid to voice it, much like Harry and Hermione. Ron is more unmovable than his two friends when it comes to his opinion.
He can be loud-mouthed and impulsive, and this can often get into trouble. One memorable instance is when he defends Hermione after Snape calls her an "insufferable know-it-all", and the intake of breath afterwards indicated he had gone too far. He is good at threats to his enemies and can make someone fall silent in an argument, such as Zacharias Smith during the first DA meeting.
Ron is arachnophobic, though he manages to overcome even that fear for his closest friends. Apparently, one of the twins turned his teddy bear into a spider when he was three, and that scarred him for life. He is a member of Dumbledore's Army.
Ron becomes Gryffindor Keeper in the fifth book, but is not very good at it, unless he gains confidence, often in the shape of Lavender Brown. The Slytherins wrote a song about him in the fifth book, Weasley is our King, which the Gryffindors get to sing when he wins the Quidditch Cup.
In the end, he marries Hermione and has two children.
