Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare

The Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, abbreviation S.P.E.W., is a movement founded by Hermione Granger, who is also the only 'active' member of this group. This society's goal is to improve the life quality of house-elves and to set them free, if possible.

Hermione founded the group after witnessing the sacking of the elf Winky at the hands of her master, Bartemius "Barty" Crouch. Appalled at how she was addressed and then sacked, she began doing research on house-elves and then founded the society.

Hermione initially planned to call her group "Stop the Outrageous Abuse of Our Fellow Magical Creatures and Campaign for a Change in Their Legal Status," but she decided that this name was overly lengthy and wouldn't fit on the letterhead.

Hermione Granger, founder, knits handmade wool hats for the elves during their 5th year. The house-elf, Dobby (currently residing in Hogwarts, formerly belonged to the Malfoys) seemed to be the only one taking the hats.
