Severus Snape (called Snivellus by some old classmates) is the Hogwarts Potions Master from Harry's first year, until his fifth. In the sixth year, he is given the Defense Against the Dark Arts post, and after Albus Dumbledore's murder, and Lord Voldemort's defeat of the Ministry of Magic, is named Hogwarts Headmaster. From Harry's first day at Hogwarts, it is quite apparent that Professor Snape dislikes him. While at school, Harry's father, James Potter and Godfather, Sirius Black, tormented Snape. Harry's father then married Lily Evans, the love of Snape's life. As a result, his dislike for Harry runs deep. This hatred results in Severus Snape treating Harry extremely unfairly. He deducts points from Gryffindor at every chance he gets, and tries repeatedly to have Harry expelled from Hogwarts. In Harry's fifth year, Snape is asked by Dumbledore to teach Harry Occlumency in an attempt to prevent Lord Voldemort from having access to Harry's thoughts, memories and emotions.

Snape is a member of the Order of the Phoenix - the first as well as the second incarnation - and is a Death Eater, which, following the original fall of Lord Voldemort at the hands of the infant Harry Potter, he was believed to have renounced privately in order to spy for Albus Dumbledore. Severus Snape had been in love with Lily Evans (Potter) ever since they were children. Because of this, his patronus was a doe, the same as Lily's. They were best friends during their early years at Hogwarts, but grew apart due to the fact that Severus was a Slytherin and Lily was a Gryffindor. They disapproved of each other's friends, and eventually their close friendship dissolved. Severus never stopped loving Lily, however, even after she married his sometime tormentor, James Potter. After school Severus joined Lord Voldemort, and became one of his Death Eaters. When Voldemort found out about the prophecy that stated that a boy born in July would be his end, and targeted the one year old Harry Potter, Severus begged him to spare Lily. The Dark Lord famously told Lily to get out of the way when he was attempting to kill baby Harry, but decided that it would be prudent to kill Lily as well. Willing to do anything to protect Lily, Severus agreed to be Dumbledore's spy. Dumbledore was unable to protect the Potter's, however, and all but Harry were killed. Lily's death destroyed Severus, and he committed himself to protecting her son, Harry Potter. During the years that Harry Potter was at Hogwarts, Severus Snape was, by all appearances, an enemy of Harry. While Snape disliked the boy due to his similarities to James Potter, he really was doing all he could to protect him. Snape followed Dumbledore's orders, going under cover as a Death Eater and secretly helping him put all of his plans into motion. When Dumbledore found that he was dying, (due to one of Voldemorts horcruxes) he asked Snape to kill him in public, so as to cement his place next to the Dark Lord. While everyone thought that Snape had shown his true colours and openly joined Voldemort, he secretly aided Harry in his quest to destroy the horcruxes. It was only after his death at the hands of Voldemort that the truth was revealed to Harry, who, after defeating Voldemort, revealed Snape's true intentions to the world. Snape was a hero after all, and perhaps the bravest of any of the Order of the Phoenix. He did it all for love. Harry Potter even named one of his sons Albus Severus Potter, to honour the two men that perhaps cared for him the most.

Despite his vitriolic attitude and greasy hair, there are a lot of readers who deem him "extremely sexy". He is one of the most popular characters in fanfiction; his popularity rivals even that of Harry Potter himself.

In the film versions of Harry Potter, Severus Snape is portrayed by Alan Rickman. To date, the films have generally portrayed a more darkly sinister version of Snape --- cold, brooding, menacing and calculating, but not prone to outright fits of rage and anger, as seen in the character portrayed in the books.

• Cruel and sadistic but loyal until the end.
• In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Albus Dumbledore calls Severus breave, and states, "...sometimes I think we sort too soon", much to Severus' dismay.
• Knew more curses and spells when he arrived at Hogwarts then the other students.
• Has a Dark Mark on his left forearm.
