Cormac McClaggen is introduced in the sixth book as a seventh-year boy that is described as being large and wiry-haired. He is invited to be a member of the Slug Club because of his apparent well-known uncle, Tiberius. Cormac is in Gryffindor.

Cormac tries out as keeper for the Gryffindor quidditch team, but he comes second to Ron Weasley, who saves one more goal than he does. Later on, we learn that this is due to the fact that Hermione Granger Confunds him before he attempts to save his last shot. Cormac is furious and demands another try, but Harry Potter, the captain, refuses any special treatment.

Cormac returns when Hermione claims that she is dating him and brings him to Slughorn's Christmas party. She only does this to spite Ron, however, because they are fighting due to his involvement with Lavender Brown. She does not enjoy her evening with him.

Later, after Ron's poisoning, Harry is forced to appoint Cormac as Gryffindor's keeper until Ron is well again to play. This proves to be very frustrating, for Cormac is constantly criticizing the other players and offering his game strategies to Harry. Cormac ends up losing the game against Hufflepuff for them, because instead of watching his goal posts, he is telling all the other players what to do. He even goes as far as to take his own beater's bat and demonstrate how to hit a bludger in the middle of the game. As Harry is yelling and flying towards him, Cormac swings at a bludger that hits Harry in the head, cracking his skull. Harry wakes up in the Hospital Wing only to learn that Gryffindor lost 320-60. Cormac is readily kicked off the team.

Cormac McClaggen does not have any significant role after that.
