HP-Wiki

There's already a Harry Potter Wiki, why do we need a second;[[1]]

I wonder why a HP-Wiki is needed, as the HP-Lexicon fulfils this task completely.

I think that might explain the seeming lack of interest in it, that's for sure. Now, an HP Wiki would have some things the Lexicon doesn't - namely, the ability to be edited by anyone and a resource on fandom in general. But there isn't really a great need for an HP information source since the Lexicon exists. It's kind of sad. ---

The reason we created it was to consolidate information that would be in the Lexicon or another encyclopedic resource, with links to discussions, fanfic, fanart, essays, fan communities, etc. If people aren't interested in making that kind of comprehensive collection of fandom- and canon-information, then we can't force them to do so - we've already added in a bunch of links that you wouldn't find in the lexicon, like those to discussion groups centered on particular characters, but we don't know *everything* that's out there, and that's where fan-editors could and should come and do so. I don't know why there's no interest in making that kind of comprehensive collection, but I wish it was otherwise. I mean, it takes about three minutes to, say, go to the Dumbledore page and add links to LJ communities and Yahoogroups focused on him, and another two minutes to create a Google RSS feed for articles that mention Dumbledore and link to that - but that's something that I *thought* fans would want to do, both for their own use and for the community at large. I guess not?

Registration and Recent Changes

When will registration and a Recent Changes page be available? -12.220.75.238 01:17, 5 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Ditto; its useful for people to have usernames so they can be contacted even if their IP changes. 144.32.128.113 14:27, 16 Jan 2006 (UTC)
For those who may not have noticed - registration has been available for some time now. --AndyM 17:47, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

HP Wikibook

Not to kill your moods, but Wikibooks (http://en.wikibooks.org) is currently developing a guide quite similar to this one already (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Muggles'_Guide_to_Harry_Potter). Please disregard the VFD for the moment. We hope to straighten things out soon. I am not sure who started this but I will try to contact them. Hopefully I can convince the efforts of all people here to start work at Wikibooks. The Wikibooks is very well managed and can offer much more than a standard MediaWiki installation.

Also, if you are interested, here are WikiMedia's servers' information and other things to show you how powerful the setup is over there: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_servers
Also, there is another HP Wiki already. 144.32.128.113 10:30, 17 Jan 2006 (UTC)

What to add/change (Links for Newbies)

For Newbies on the Wiki it might be a bit hard to see WHAT to add, once they see that all characters they can think of already exist etc. So how about directly linking to the wanted, short or dead-end entries? I know they can be found easily under Special pages, but "toolbox" sounds so modly, in my opinion.

Goals of this wiki

Yep, it's me again. I wrote this earlier today, but accidentally pressed "Show preview" once to often... *sheepishly*

Anyway, I sort of agree with that Wikibook comment above, even though I've contributed LOTS to the HarryPotterWiki. It would be sort of stupid for this wiki to hold the exact same information that can be found on a dozen other sites. As this project has been initiated by the Modly Gods (or is the Godly Mods?) of FictionAlley, it makes sense to give the whole wiki a sense of fanfiction, and indeed, with the links from the character template that seems to be the case.

Writers have other interests and needs than readers, and the wiki should accomodate these needs. For someone writing a fic about a minor (or even major) character, suddenly details become important. Habits, speech pattern ("Oho!", use of "You-Know-Who" vs. "the Dark Lord" etc.), as well as likes and dislikes (corned beef, anyone?) all hold valuable information.

Should anyone actually be reading this, what do you think?

As an example of what I envision I added information on the Luna Lovegood entry, because I was already sitting on all that stuff anyway, so I might as well use it.

Goals of this wiki

If you look on the Harry Potter page on here, you'll see a few of the ways that what we're doing differs from the other Wikis. Yes, some of the information is the same, obviously, as it comes from the same source materials, but by hosting it here on FA, we not only will we (shortly - we just need to upgrade to VB3 and upgrade our wiki version, and we expect to do both within the next month) have a way for people to use their longstanding FA identity here on HPWIKI, we'll also have ways for people to incorporate links to discussions of characters in essay, posting, fanfic and fanart form. Personally, I think that's a little more comprehensive, in a way, than the standard approach on other sites.

I wish to ask about the "spoilers" parts all over the wiki. If someone comes on the Harry Potter Wiki they can of course certainly expect spoilers. I think the spoiler warning should only be on the front page. Otherwise, spoiler warnings would be required on almost every single page! Leemorrison 22:54, 10 Oct 2006 (UTC)

Some Suggestions

From my limited browsing of this Wiki so far, it seems like there are things that could definitely use some work. Many articles are not written an in encyclopedic form or have serious misspellings or formatting problems or questionable factual accuracy. Content is duplicated when it should be linked using redirects. Consideration should be given to opening the Recent changes for all to see so that people know what's being worked on. Also, I recommend a Talk page template similar to the one being used at Muppet Wiki so that people know immediately if someone has a question about an article.

You guys could also use a better Main Page. Agent0042 20:54, 30 Oct 2006 (UTC)

I moved this down to the bottom so everything is in chronological order as much as possible. We definitely could use the help with any aspects of the Wiki! If you're interested in tweaking the front page or otherwise coming on-staff, let's try and connect on either an IM or on Skype and coordinate? We're also going to add a link to the Firefox 2.0 browser, with its lovely spellchecker all built in, and hope that encouraging use of that helps avoid the worst of the spelling issues. Your Muppet Wiki is lovely - I'm an old-school fan with kids who are into it now, and you've created some lovely work there.

Hrm. On Muppet Wiki, we always post the most recent discussion at the top --- that way, everyone can find the most recent stuff right away. As for being site staff, I really don't know. I might consider it, but I'm just not sure I have the time. How can talk on that, please, go ahead and add me! Oh --- and the Muppet Wiki --- I wish I could claim credit, but it's not mine. I'm just a contributor there and have been for a little less than a year. I'm responsible for most of the Bear in the Big Blue House content there. As for Firefox 2.0 --- isn't it still in beta? I think we should removed the special HBP search box from the bottom of the main page - all the categories have been merged to the general sections and have been added to the vfd screen. --Sang_dencre 10:54, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
