Veritaserum is described as a colorless, odorless potion that forces its drinker to tell the truth. It is best administered when the victim is off-guard, as there are many defenses against veritaserum. It is not admissible in court proceedings and the use of Veritaserum is strictly controlled by the Ministry. Brewing Veritaserum is a NEWT-level potion according to Professor Slughorn at the start of Harry's 6th year Potions class.
