| Krum from the German krumm, crooked, bent, or Norwegian, krum, meaning the same thing. Victor means winner or conqueror, in Latin; it is a common name in Russia and other Slavic nations (including Bulgaria). |
Viktor Krum is the Seeker in the national Quidditch team of Bulgaria, student at Durmstrang, and Durmstrang's candidate in the Triwizard Tournament. He was only 18 in Goblet of Fire, meaning he was born around 1976.
He went to the Yule Ball with Hermione Granger, whom he also rescued from the merpeople in the Second Task of the Triwizard Tournament. He claimed that he had 'never felt like this about anybody else,' and is pen pals with Hermione after Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, to the great annoyance of Ron Weasley.
Viktor is described as having a surly face, being very skinny, having heavy, thick black eyebrows, looking really grumpy, thin, dark, sallow-skinned, and with a large, curved nose. he is duck-footed and round shouldered, and generally looks like an "overgrown bird of prey" . He speaks with a pronounced accent, and has particular problems with the pronunciation of Hermione's name, mangling it to "Her-my-own", then "Herm-own-ninny".
He attends the wedding of Fleur Delacour and Bill Weasley where he becomes angered by a symbol worn by Xeno Lovegood apparently the symbol of the dark wizard Grindelwald. He recognises it as such because the symbol is carved into a wall in Durmstrang castle. Viktor's grandfather was killed by Grindelwald some time before his defeat by Albus Dumbledore.
