The wand is the device required for most of the magic in the wizard or witching world. To make a wizard or witch unable to use their power, you only have to take away their wand. However, the power is in the wizard or witch, not in the wand. You might think of the wand as an instrument to focus the power at the proper point and in the proper shape.

Wands can be made of many materials. Most preferred are fine wood and ivory. A high quality wand contains unicorn hairs, phoenix tail feathers, or the heartstrings of dragons in its core. The length of the wand is not important for the magic, only for good appearance: A large wizard or witch would look ridiculous with a short wand and vice versa.

A wizard or witch does not select a wand, the wand selects him or her. This is similar to the Hogwarts house: There is no choice but a destiny. It may be for this reason that just one shop exists in England where you can buy a wand - Ollivanders in Diagon Alley.

Wands can break like other tools. Then, it is as dangerous to use them as it is dangerous to use a damaged high-power tools: Spells can backfire against the wizard or witch or go straight but turn out the inverse of what was supposed to happen.

Harry Potter's wand is most unusual: Holly (Stechpalme) and phoenix feather, eleven inches. The phoenix (Fawkes) which provided this feather gave just one more, and the second one was used for the wand of Lord Voldemort.
