JK Rowling uses her website as a way to communicate directly with her fans. The site contains sections such as News, JKR's Biography, Rumors, the Wizard of the Month, Favorite Fan Sites, Extra Details that were left out of the books, and many other useful features and links. JKR has often used the Rumors section to respond to theories that fans have developed. She will also use the site to give readers clues or facts (during the wait for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince she posted three of the chapter titles from the upcoming books.) Because it is so easy for rumors to get started on the internet JKR has stated that readers should not believe anything unless they hear it from her publishers, herself or this website. An excellent resource.
