Ariana is the younger sister of Albus and Aberforth Dumbledore, and the daughter of Percival and Kendra Dumbledore.

Normally a sweet gentle girl, three local Muggle boys saw Ariana using magic at the age of six and brutally assaulted her, afraid of what they had seen. Her father, Percival Dumbledore, attacked them to avenge her and was sent to Azkaban. The psychological damage from the assault caused Ariana to reject her magic, bottling it up inside, and yet uncontrollably bursting it out of her violently at unpredictable moments.

Her mother, Kendra, moved the family from Mould-on-the-Wold to Godric's Hollow shortly after this incident, and largely kept Ariana indoors, so her magic explosions would not be observed by or threaten others. However, shortly after Albus's graduation, one of Ariana's magical explosions killed Kendra, leaving Albus to serve as head of the family.

A few months later, Ariana was killed during an argument between Albus, Aberforth, and Gellert Grindelwald. It is unknown who fired the spell that killed her.

Aberforth Dumbledore keeps a painting of Ariana above the sitting room mantle in the Hog's Head in Hogsmeade. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, this portrait concealed a secret tunnel into the Room of Requirement at Hogwarts, when the room took the form of a refuge for Dumbledore's Army members.

Rumors, perpetuated by Rita Skeeter's biography "The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore", insinuated that Ariana was actually a squib, and that her ashamed mother kept her indoors to hide this fact.
