The Quaffle is the biggest ball in Quidditch, the red one that has to be passed between the goalposts into the opposite team's hoop in order to score ten points. Three players in each team, the Chasers, try to do this and to stop the other teams Chasers from being successful in their attempt.

The Keeper has to block the Quaffle.

  • The earliest Quaffles were made from leather. Of all the Quidditch ball, the Quaffle was the only one not run by magic and had to be caught and thrown with the hands. Most Quaffles up until 1875 - Gripping Charms were discovered - usually had straps attached, or finger holes, like Muggle bowling balls. With the Gripping Charms in place now, the Chaser can have a decent hold on the Quaffle without the unnecessery aids.

The modern Quaffles are now twelve inches in diameter and looks seamless.

Chasers got irritated a lot when the other Chasers missed the Quaffle and would constantly have to dive to the ground to catch it once again. So, Daisy Pennifold bewitched the Quaffle so it would fall slowly to the ground and Chasers could grab it in mid-air faster. It is known as the "Pennifold Quaffle".

The Quaffle became scarlet in 1711. In the rain, the leather's color matched the muddy ground, so Quidditch officals desided to make it a noticeable for all weather conditions; scarlet.

  • The Quaffle is passed between the three Chasers and is attempted to be thrown into the opposite team's golden hoops. Each time it successfully thrown in, that team gets 10 points.
